Alfred Smith was born in Beverley the 24 Feb 1897, the son of Sergeant George Smith and Mary Emma. In 1911 Alfred was living in Victoria Barracks with his parents and eight siblings, his father was serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment. George was from Leicester but had enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment in Beverley in 1890, he served 21 years, took part in the Boer War 1900-1901 and was awarded the South Africa Medal with Cape Colony Clasps. George was discharged honourably in 1911, a Colour Sergeant on the Permanent Staff of 'G' Company. His pension record stated his intention to reside in Leicester.
Alfred was educated at St Mary's Boys' School, Beverley and obtained a scholarship to Beverley Grammar School, at the outbreak of war he was a clerk in Leicester. It is not clear when Alfred enlisted in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, or Princess Alexandra's Own, the Beverley and Scarborough Terriers, he was killed in action on 15 Sep 1916, at the age of nineteen. His parents were living in Wood Lane, Beverley.
Alfred was awarded the Victory and British War Medals for his service.
