George Skinner was born in Beverley in 1899, the son of Francis and Emily Skinner, of Far Grove, Norwood. Francis was from a family of wood carvers/cabinet makers. In 1911 George was still at school.

By 1915 George had enlisted in the army, followed a month later by his brother Richard. They both joined the 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, taking part in the Battles of the Somme in 1916. Both brothers' photographs appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Sep 1916 when Richard was wounded. George received the Silver War Badge in 1917 when he was discharged from the army due to illness, he was drummer in the 24th Provisional Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1915 Star, his name also appears on the Norwood Street Shrine.

In 1922 he married Lily Carter at Walkington parish church. He died in 1965.
