Thomas Shingles was born in Beverley the 12 Jul 1897 and baptised at St Nicholas’ Church the 22 Jul 1897. He was one of twelve children born to James Shingles and Jane (nee Hebden ). Jane was from Skipsea whilst James was born in Norfolk and moved to the Arras/Market Weighton area to work as a farm labourer. The family spent much of the 1890s living in Molescroft before moving to West Terrace, Potter Hill, Beverley. Thomas is remembered on the South Dalton War Memorial it is possible he worked in that area. Thomas was unmarried.
Thomas served in “D” Battery of the Royal Field Artillery, 52nd Brigade, 21st Division as a gunner. He arrived in France on 23 Nov 1915. The 21st Division were holding the front line on the Somme near Mametz Wood, between Albert and Peronne, and was involved in heavy fighting during the second week of the Battle of the Somme. It was there that Thomas was killed in action on 14 Jul 1916. He is buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery, France. Thomas was awarded the War and Victory Medals and the 1914-15 Star.
Thomas is commemorated on the Hengate Memorial, Beverley and on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster. Thomas is also remembered on the Beckside and Flemingate Street Shrine along with his brother James Robert Shingles who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
