Charles Shepherd was born in Beverley in Nov 1885 the son of Charles, a tannery labourer and Emily Ann (nee Adams), the family lived in Brougham Row, close to Beckside. Emily died when Charles was 5 but the 1891 Census shows his father continued to bring up his children in Brougham Row with the help of housekeeper, Annie Saxby. On 25 Dec 1906 Charles married Margaret Welbourn Saxby at St Nicholas Church, Beverley giving their address as Beckside. In 1911 Charles and Margaret were living at 4 St Nicholas Road with their daughters Gladys and Annie Charles’ was working as a tanner’s labourer.
Charles enlisted with 1/5th Yorkshire Regiment and was awarded the 1915 Star having arrived in France on 18 Apr 1915. He was promoted to Corporal whilst serving with the Yorkshire Regiment and ended his army career as Acting Sergeant with 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment. Charles photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Jul 1916 recording he had been wounded, at this time the Yorkshire Regiment was in trenches around Kemmel, close to Ypres.
Charles is listed on the street shirne for St Andrew’s Street now located on Flemingate.
Charles returned to work as a tannery labourer, and in 1939 Charles and Margaret with children Horace, Olive, Nellie and Ernest were living at 4 Kings Square, Beverley. Charles died aged 64 and was buried on 28 Dec 1949 at Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley.
