David Southwick was born on 6 Aug 1891 and was the 4th child of 14 born to George Tom and Jane Eliza nee Robinson. His father was a tanner’s labourer and the family lived on Wilbert Lane before moving to Eastgate. David was baptized at Beverley Minister on 23 Nov 1894. He was educated at Beverley Wesleyan School before starting work at age 14.

David was a grocer’s assistant on leaving school and became a grocer’s manager after the war.

Five of the Southall brothers served in the Army and two, Samuel and Harry were killed in 1916 and 1917 respectively.

David enlisted in Apr 1916 to 7th Northumberland Fusiliers but most of his war service was with the Yorkshire Regiment and then the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment.

Having been demobbed in May 1919, David rejoined the 5th Yorkshire Regiment in 1920.

David appears to have spent some time around Nottingham as in 1926 he married Irene Eva Wealtham in Basford, Nottingham and their first child, Peter Robert was born in Basford the following year.

At the time of the 1939 Register David, Irene and their 2 children were living in Wednesday Market and David gives his occupation as Grocery and Provisions Manager.

David’s died in 1985 age 93 and was buried at Beverley Queensgate cemetery on the 15 Jan 1985. Irene died 3 years later in 1988 and was buried with her husband.
