Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Fred Salter was born in Beverley the 8 Dec 1883 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 19 Aug 1889, the son of George Salter and Emma Jane, who married in Hull in 1882. George Salter was originally from London and was a general labourer. The family lived in Brigham’s Yard, just off Wednesday Market, Beverley. Fred lived for some time with his uncle, George Roe in the yard. Fred became a labourer after leaving school, but by 1906 he was a plater’s helper at the Beverley shipyard, Grovehill Road. He worked there for the rest of his life. On Boxing Day 1906 Fred married Edith Emily Gray, born 1883, of Flemingate. They lived at 108 Minstermoorgate, Well Gardens and later at Denton Street, Holme Church Lane. They had two children, Emily Florence born 1908 and Frederick A born 1917.

Before the war Fred was a member of the TA and like a lot of his Beverley contemporaries served in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, the “Beverley Terriers”. He consented to service abroad after the start of the war and arrived in France on 18 Apr 1915. The 5th were immediately pressed into action in the Second Battle of Ypres at St Julien within days of their arrival. They remained in Belgium until 1916 and the Beverley Guardian of 8 May 1916 notes that Fred was wounded in the action at Hill 60. Fred served until late Mar 1919 so was probably involved in further actions on the Somme in 1916, Arras and Passchendaele in 1917 and France again in 1918. He reached the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory Medals.

After the war Fred returned to work at the shipyard. In 1939 the family was living at 24 Martin Street, Beverley. Fred died in 1951 aged 67 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 19 Jun 1951.
