Ernest Rispin was born in 1894 the son of George and Mary Rispin, George was a tanners labourer. Aged 17 in 1911 Ernest was employed as a labourer at the whiting works in Beverley and living in the home of his married brother, George. In Jul 1911, he emigrated to Canada, with his brother James.

In Oct 1914 Ernest enlisted to serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force and saw action in France in with the 18th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal in Jun 1917.

The citation read :

MILITARY MEDAL.
North-east of VIMY on night of 17/18th May. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. Preparatory to a raid the enemy heavily barraged our trenches. Corporal Rispin’s Platoon suffered several casualties and he himself rendered valuable first-aid to the wounded and succeeded in evacuating several serious cases from the front line. By his fearless example and courage he was successful in evacuating two stretcher and several walking cases, working all the time under intense enemy shell fire.
