Alfred was born in 1889 and was baptised at St. Mary's Church, Dalton Holme the 10 Feb 1889, the son of Henry and Maria Robson. Alfred was one of five children, sisters Ann born 1891 and Edith born 1886; brothers Joseph born 1883 and Richard born 1884.
Alfred joined the Waggoners Reserve on 25 Jul 1913, his attestation form states that he was sixty seven inches tall, he weighed 149 pounds, had blue eyes and brown hair and his occupation was a carter. He was injured at the front when he sustained a fractured leg as reported in the Beverley Guardian on 2 Jan 1915.
He was awarded the 1914 Star, Victory Medal and the British Medal
