Robert Henry also known as Harry Peck was born 7 Sep 1896 in Hull and was baptized 26 Sep 1896 at St Barnabas Church, Hull, the son of Alfred and Jane Elizabeth Peck (nee Todd). By 1911 the family had moved to Beaver Road, Beverley and Harry was employed as a tanner’s labourer, he was also a member of the Church Lad’s Brigade.
Harry enlisted with the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment on 5 Sep 1914, he served in France in 1915 and was awarded the 15 Star medal. On 11 Mar an article on the Beverley Guardian newspaper reported that Harry had received slight injuries by a rifle grenade and that he was still in France. Later that year on 20 May the newspaper reported that he had been wounded again. In a letter home he wrote ‘I was wounded on the 23rd my arm was badly shattered and I have got my right forearm taken off and I have got over the worst of it’. Due to his wounds he was discharged from the army on 27 Feb 1918 and was awarded the Silver War badge. He also was awarded the British and Victory medal. He was living at Loughborough during this time.
Robert married Mary J Hone in Warwickshire in 1920. They had four children and in 1939 were living in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. Robert was a trading salesman. It is not known when he died.
