George Markham Pottage was born in Market Weighton in 1883 and baptised at All Saints Church, Market Weighton in Sep 1883, the son of George and Alice Pottage, they lived in Cross Street, Beverley with his siblings John, Florence and Ada. George was working in the family business Pottage Bros, as a storeman when he enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps in May 1916 aged 33. In Oct he was serving with 75 Squadron as Acting Corporal with the ground crew. The Squadron did not serve abroad, they were based in Goldington Bedfordshire. They were a home defence unit operating from landing grounds on anti-Zeppelin patrols. In Sep 1917 the Squadron moved to East Anglia to fly patrols with BE 12s. George served until 1919 as a reservist and was discharged on 30 Apr 1920.
On 30 Dec 1916 George married Elizabeth Dove, they lived at 15 Railway Street, Beverley with sons Norman Rex and George. When George was discharged from the RAF he returned to the family business of Pottage Bros. He died in 1952 aged 69.
