Harry Peacock was born in Beverley the 11 Jan 1876 and was baptised at Beverley Minster the 7 Jan 1883 along with his brother Sam, born in 1873. Harry was the second of nine children born to Harry Peacock and his wife Sarah Ann (nee Osgerby). Harry’s father was a “beer house keeper”, landlord of the Lady Le Gros public house, Norwood. In 1891 Harry was working as a “mill boy”, subsequently he became a farm labourer.

On Christmas Day 1900 Harry married Lizzie Wool at St Mary’s Church, Beverley. Lizzie was born in 1876 in Beswick. They had four children, Marion born 1903, Grace born 1905, Rhoda born 1909 and Bernard born 1922. In 1901 the family lived in Coxton Row, Norwood, but later moved to the Woodmansey area. By the time war broke out they were living at 1 Regent Street, Beverley.

Harry was one of two Harry Peacocks to serve as a private in the Army Veterinary Corps in France. If he was Private No 7948 he enlisted early in the war and arrived in France on 26 Oct 1915; but if he was Private SE/17094 he had arrived there in 1916 and was discharged with sickness on 20 Sep 1918 and awarded a Silver Badge. The Army Veterinary Corps in France consisted of Veterinary Hospitals, each of which could look after over 2000 animals, mainly horses and mules. The AVC was also divided into Mobile Veterinary Sections attached to each Division. Their role was to evacuate sick and wounded animals to hospital or treat them nearer the front line. Harry was awarded the War and Victory Medals and possibly the 1914-15 Star.

Harry returned to Beverley and became a lorry driver’s mate according to the 1939 Register. He died in Oct 1956 and was buried at Beverley’s Queensgate Cemetery on 27 Oct 1956. Lizzie died in 1966.
