John was born in Withernsea in the spring of 1884. He was one of six children born to Thruston Tindall and Hannah Parkinson (nee Thompson). Thruston was a bricklayer’s labourer later becoming a fisherman at Withernsea, the family moving to the town in the 1880s, living at various addresses. John was a bricklayer, in 1913 he married Mabel Wilde at Sculcoates Register Office, Hull. Their only child, Dorothy Irene was born in Hull the 12 Jul 1913, the family moved to North Ferriby where Dorothy was baptised the 3 Aug 1913.

John served in the army as a private. His photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Jan 1918 but the caption did not specify his regiment. He was serving in India, probably in the infantry.

After the war the family lived in Beverley at 10 St Mary’s Terrace. On 5 Dec 1922 Mabel died and was buried at St Martin’s Cemetery on 7 Dec 1922.
