John Palmer was born in Beverley the 5 Jun 1898 son of John William Palmer, and Sarah Ann (nee Plaskitt) from Barnetby-le-Wold, Lincolnshire. They married in Caistor in 1892 and lived at Lindum House, 40 Cherry Tree Lane, Beverley. They had four children. John was educated at the Minster School, Flemingate and then became an apprentice at Fisher and Tanner.

John enlisted on 2 Aug 1916 and was called up for service on 8 Jan 1917. He went to Woolwich, London to sit a proficiency test as a turner for the Army Ordnance Corps. He failed the test and became an infantry private in the 1st Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. John became a prisoner of war in Apr 1918. He returned home after the war ended in Nov 1918. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

John enlisted as a regular soldier in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and served in Iraq until at least 1924. He was awarded the General Service Medal with the Iraq clasp.

John became a well engineer and spent some time in Raywell Sanitorium with tuberculosis in the late 1930s. He married Gertrude Norton of Beverley, at St Mary’s on 9 Apr 1931, they lived at 65 Grovehill Road and had no children. John died in 1983.
