Arthur Pooley was born the 14 Jul 1894 in Hornsea, he was baptised the 18 Aug 1895, the son of Jane Marlow Pooley. They lived with his grandfather William Pooley in Hornsea. Arthur had a younger brother Frank and two sisters, Laura and Doris. Arthur married Cecelia Agnes Sutton on 14 Nov 1915 at St. Nicholas church, Hornsea, they had a daughter Cecelia Agnes. Arthur's service record contains a letter to the armed forces stating that his mother had had the child in her care from the moment she was born. This also meant that his mother was entitled to regular pension payments. His daughter was born the 7 Feb 1916.
Arthur served as a private in the 12th East Yorkshire Regiment, his service record indicates his previous occupation was as pressing gun cotton with the British Oil And Cake Mills. In May 1917 his Battalion were involved in the battle at Oppy Wood. The result of this particular battle was 9 killed, 128 wounded with 1 dying from his wounds and 156 missing of which Arthur was one of them. He was taken prisoner of war. Arthur died from pneumonia caused by the flu on Tuesday 31 Dec 1918. This was the day he'd been repatriated on board the S.S. La Cour whilst waiting to return to England. He was buried in Copehagen Western Cemetery in one plot with 18 other soldiers and 5 sailors.
After his death he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British Medal. His medals were sent to Jane Pooley, his mother, in trust for his daughter for when she reached of age.
