John William White Piercy was born the 10 Feb 1880 in Beverley, the son of William White and Elizabeth White Piercy. William was born in Middleton on the Wolds in 1859 and Elizabeth in Beverley in 1860. William worked as a tanner’s labourer, they lived at 30 Keldgate, Beverley. By 1891 they had moved to 22 Keldgate. John had two brothers, Thomas born 1883 and Jonas born 1890 and a sister, Violet born 1888. By 1901 the family had moved to 4 Hoggards Yard, Beverley and another sister Annie E had arrived. John was now 21 and worked as a tanner’s labourer. On 23 Apr 1904 he married Mary Elizabeth Hewson in Beverley Minster. Their daughter Blanche was born the 27 Mar 1908 and was baptised on 15 Apr 1908. Mary died the 10 Jul 1909 aged 34.
John joined the Army on 27 May 1908 and lived in the Garrison working as a labourer. His daughter Blanche, aged three lived with her grandparents at 88 Keldgate, Beverley. By 1914 he was a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was later transferred to the labour corps as a private and was discharged on 14 Aug 1918 through sickness aged 38 years. He had served overseas. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the Silver War Badge.
The 1939 Register shows John living at 88 Keldgate, Beverley with his mother Elizabeth. He never remarried. John William White died in 1946 aged 66. Includes photograph, information taken from census, military records, Commonwealth War Graves, newspapers |
