Cyril Oxtoby was born in Beverley the 5 Apr 1895 and was baptized at Beverley Minster the 8 May 1895, the son of John and Edith Oxtoby (nee Cape), he had 3 sisters and a brother, his father was a tanner’s labourer. The family lived in Minstermoorgate, Beverley.
When Cyril was aged 16 years and 11 months, he enlisted with the 5th Yorkshire Territorials. At the beginning of the war he was embodied into full service and from Apr 1915 served with the expeditionary forces in France. He was awarded the 15 Star medal. He was discharged from the force in Apr 1916 having served 5 years. Immediately after he was recalled to the 5th Yorkshire battalion and served a further year on the front. He was finally discharged in 1919 as drummer, aged 23. He was awarded the British and Victory medals.
In the early 1920’s Cyril trained as mental health nurse and worked at East Riding Mental hospital until the late 1940’s. In 1926 he married Elizabeth Harvey at Berwick, Northumberland. The couple lived in Fisher Square, Beverley. Cyril died in 1961 aged 66.
