Thomas Newsome was born in Cooperknowe, Scotland the 17 Jul 1882 and was brought up in Beverley. He was son of Thomas and Margaret Newsome. He attended Beverley Minster boys’ school.
In 1900 Thomas enlisted in the Royal Horse Artillery and served for several years before becoming part of the reserve. In 1901 he was serving as a regular soldier in the Royal Horse Artillery and was stationed at Aldershot. On 26 Feb 1911 Thomas married Lizzie Russell at St Nicholas Church, Beverley. Their son Thomas was born the 10 Jun 1911. In 1911 the family were living with Thomas’ widowed mother at Newbegin, Beverley.
Thomas was called up on mobilization on 4 Aug 1914 and served with the Expeditionary force in France and Flanders. He took part in many engagements including the operations on the Aisne and the Marne. Thomas was killed in action during the advance on St Quentin on 29 Sep 1918. He is buried at Trefcon British Cemetery. His commander wrote ‘He was one of the best of my NCO’s always cheerful and ready for any work’
He was awarded the 14 Star, the Victory and British medals.
