Harold Nelson was born the 16 Nov 1898 and was baptised at Newington on 21 Dec 1898. he was the son of Richard and Charlotte Nelson who lived in St George’s Road, Hull. Richard and Charlotte had six children: Margaret, Richard Henry, John Roland, Charlotte Evelyn, Charles Victor and Harold. When their father died John and Richard were placed in the Port of Hull Orphans’ Home on Cottingham Road where they received their education and Charlotte was placed in the Hull Seaman’s’ Orphan Asylum in Myton. In 1911 Harold was living with his mother and his sister Margaret in Molescroft.
Harold enrolled with the Royal Navy in 1916, his occupation at the time was gardener. He served as an able-bodied seaman. He was awarded the Victory, Service and British medals. At the end of the war he continued in the Navy and lived in Chatham. At the beginning of Second World War he re-enlisted as a Royal Naval pensioner. Nothing more is known about Harold.
