James Nutbrown was born at Wistow, Selby on 23 Aug 1880, he was registered at birth as Charles James Nutbrown. He was one of eight children born to James Nutbrown and his wife Harriett (nee Shippin). In 1901 he married Martha Ann Lambert, born in Beverley in 1885, at Tadcaster. They moved to Beverley where their children were born Mary Louisa in 1905 and James Alfred in 1909. Their son James died was buried at the St John and St Martin Cemetery in Beverley on 24 Jul 1909. Martha Ann died a year later and was buried the 18 Oct 1910. The family was living in Mill Lane. James worked as a labourer for the North Eastern Railway.

James joined the Army Service Corps as a territorial on 4 May 1911. James served as a driver and was pictured in the Beverley Guardian of 31 Mar 1917 which stated he had been in France for 18 months. As a territorial he was given the option to serve overseas if he wished. He reached the rank of Sergeant and then that of Acting Sergeant Major. However he contracted an unknown “sickness” and was discharged from the army in 1919 and awarded a Silver Badge. He was also awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the Territorial Force War Medal as he had served since 1911.

He returned to Beverley living in the Walkergate area. He married for a second time in 1912, Mary Jane Lock was born in Beverley in 1888. By the time of the 1939 Register he was described as being “separated” from his wife; they appeared together on the 1918 electoral register but not on that of 1925. James was a general labourer. James died at the age of 71 in 1951.
