Wilfred Ness was born in Cottingham the 10 Feb 1891 and baptised at Cottingham Parish Church the 4 Mar 1891. He was the only son born to Herbert Watson and Elizabeth Ness. Herbert in 1891 was an assistant overseer’s clerk but by the First World War he was a school attendance officer. The family home was in Hallgate, Cottingham. At the time of his first marriage on 4 Jun 1910 at the parish church, Wilfred was employed as a chauffeur. He married Lily Spindley, born in Hull in 1887. Their only child, Kenneth W Ness was born in 1927. They initially lived in Wainfleet Avenue in Cottingham but soon moved to Beverley and lived at 60 North Bar Without into the post-war period. Wilfred was chauffeur to J A Dunkerly, a ship broker who worked in Hull but lived at Hurn House on the edge of Westwood.

Wilfred enlisted early in the war and arrived in France on 12 Aug 1915. He remained there for the rest of the conflict. He served as a Lance Corporal in the (Royal) Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport Division. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory medals.

Wilfred returned to being a chauffeur, living at West End, Walkington in 1939. His wife Lily died in 1935. He remarried in Hull in 1942. His second wife was Kathleen Appleby; with whom he had he had six children, the first born in late 1941. Wilfred died in Hull in 1981.
