George Neve was born in Newington, Hull the 9 Oct 1888, the son of Owen and Jane Neve, Owen was born in East Tuddenham, Norfolk and worked for the North Eastern Railway as a guard. Jane was from Bridlington, where they were married in 1882. They had six children. The family lived at Western Villas, Hessle Road, Hull before moving to Beverley in the early 1900s. Owen was promoted and worked for the NER at Beverley as a traffic foreman. The family lived at 48 Cherry Tree Lane. George was educated in Hull and won a scholarship to St Mark’s Teacher Training College, King’s Road, Chelsea where he was recorded in the 1911 census. He qualified and returned to Hull as an assistant schoolmaster, commuting from Beverley by train. He was a sportsman and played football and cricket.

George enlisted on 11 Nov 1914 and joined the East Riding Regiment as a private but was rapidly promoted, becoming an instructor to the 9th (Reserve) Battalion at their training camp at Rugeley. He reached the senior warrant officer rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He saw active service in France after 1916 with the 1st Battalion and then the 11th Battalions of the East Yorkshire Regiment. In March 1919 he was discharged from the military (with a Silver badge) as being unfit for further service. He received the War and Victory Medals.

George married Lily Scoffin at Beverley Minster on 9 Jun 1915. George died in Hull in Apr 1944 and his obituary in the Hull Daily Mail of 12 Apr 1944 notes that he had always worked for Hull Education Authority, at Selby Street, Paisley Street, Springburn Street, and Constable Street elementary boys’ schools. He was Honorary Treasurer of the local branch of the National Association of Schoolmasters for 15 years, was an active member of St Martin’s Church and had founded the Hull Schools Cricket League and was a trainer for City Boy’s football team
