James Edward Lane was born on 28 Feb 1900 in Beverley the son of James Robinson and Annie J Lane (nee Barrett). His father was an auctioneer, valuer and bailiff with premises in Hengate, Beverley. His business partner was John Elwell. In Oct 1936 they tragically died within a day of each other, James at home and John collapsed on Beverley Railway Station the following day. In 1901 the family lived at 37 Hengate. By 1911 they had moved to 4 Hengate, Beverley.

The Beverley Recorder and Echo of Sep 1911 records James falling out of a tree. He and his friend, Jonny Blyth were gathering acorns and he stepped on a rotten branch. He was found unconscious under the tree by a golfer. He sustained a broken wrist and was taken home. He joined the Church Lads Brigade in 1914.

It is not known what role James played in the First World War but he did serve during the Second World War in the Royal Artillery.

James married Margaret Gray in 1923 in Beverley. By the time of the 1939 Register they were living separately, James was living at 30 Kings Square with a servant and Margaret was living at 6 Hotham Square, Beverley. James died aged 86 in Beverley in 1986
