John Lount was born in Bradford the 24 Jan 1898 and baptised at Holy Trinity the 10 Mar 1898. His father, George Abraham Lount was from Benningholme, Holderness, he married Edith Hogg of Beverley in 1893. Edith was born in 1871 and died in Beverley in 1900. They had six children. George Lount married again in 1903 to Sara Robinson. The family lived on Grovehill Road and in 1911 George was employed as a labourer at the local shipyard. He later became a farmer at High Grange Farm. John was described in the 1911 census as an errand boy at a local dentist but later worked as a bargeman.
John joined the Royal Navy the 30 Mar 1915, signing on for 12 years service. He signed on again and served until 1941. He served as a stoker and rose to the rank of Leading Stoker. During WW1 he served on the Dreadnought Battleship, HMS Collingwood. The ship was involved in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 but spent much of the war on patrol and training duties as part of the Home and Grand Fleets. John was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-1915 Star.
He married Charlotte Annie Drax-Hackford in Hull in 1937. John later lived at 262 Grovehill Road, Beverley after leaving the Royal Navy. He died aged 85 on 15 Aug 1983. Charlotte died in 1982.
