William Lowthorpe was born in 1879, the son of Shadwell and Mary Lowthorpe (nee Mitchell), of Dog and Duck Lane, Beverley. Shadwell and Mary had five children between them from previous marriages and William was the second of the five sons they had together.

William married Elizabeth Scrowton Clark in St Mary's, Sculcoates on the 23 May 1904. By 1911 they were living in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, with William's younger brothers, Charles and Shadwell, and had two daughters, Lena and Edna.

William enlisted as Private 240478 in the 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and died of wounds received on 28 May 1918 in France. His brother Charles served in the same regiment and both were awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal and the 1915 Star. Charles was also awarded a Silver Medal. William is buried in the Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt and is remembered in the Gainsborough WW1 Roll of Honour.
