Robert Lowthorpe was born in 1883, the son of Shadwell and Mary Lowthorpe (nee Mitchell), of Dog and Duck Lane, Beverley. Shadwell and Mary had five children between them from previous marriages and Robert was the third eldest of the five sons they had together.

Robert married Caroline Elizabeth Widdas, the daughter of Charles Arthur Widdas, a painter on the 14 Feb 1906.

Robert served as Corporal 30102 in the York and Lancs Regiment and later as Corporal 18371 in the Labour Corp, he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

After the war Robert and Caroline had three children Christiana, Gladys and Robert Edward. Robert died the 18 Jan 1933 at the age of 51 and is buried in St Mary's New Walk Cemetery. Caroline died in 1972.
