William was born the 13 Sep 1890, the fifth of seven children, he was baptisted at Beverley Wesleyan chapel on 3 Oct 1890. His parents were James Robertson and Annie Iveson Lane (nee Barnet). James was an auctioneer and valuer and William worked with his father as an assistant auctioneer. William married Maud Gertrude Appleby, on 3 Dec 1911, at St Mary’s Church, Beverley; they had four children, Joan, Constance, Francis and Betty. William enlisted with the East Yorkshire regiment in 1914, he embarked for Alexandria in Oct 1915. He became part of the Machine Gun Corps which moved to France in Dec 1917. He was awarded the 15 star, the Victory and British medal.
After the war William worked as a fitter and then he re-enlisted with the Royal Tank Corps and spent a further 4 years and 198 days in the Army, being discharged at Barnet in 1929.
On the 1939 register William was working as a berthing master in the Hull docks, he died in 1964.
