John Staveley Landamore was born the 17 Jul 1898 and baptised the 21 Aug 1898 at All Saints' Church, Etton. His parents were George James Landamore, a shepherd and a native of Lakenham near Norwich and Mary Ann, nee Staveley, from Southburn. John was the third of their five children. His siblings were Mary Elizabeth, George Robert, Arthur Ernest and Edith Annie.

John was conscripted into the 2nd/6th (Bradford Rifles) Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment. He later served with the 2nd/7th (Leeds Rifles) Prince of Wales's Own (West Riding) Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Arras on 28 Mar 1918. In Jun 1918, the 2nd/7th was itself disbanded and the soldiers dispersed to other units. Johns photograph was published in the Beverley Guardian of 26 Oct 1918, in which he is wearing a cap with a Northumberland Fusiliers cap badge, although there is no mention of him ever belonging to that Regiment on the Medal Rolls. He was transferred to Class Z Reserve on 18 Feb 1919 and returned home to Yorkshire.

John married Edith Byram on 28 Nov 1925 at North Ferriby, they had two children, Kathleen Joyce born 1926 and Geoffrey Malham born 1933. In 1939 the family lived in Wallingfen Lane, Newport, near Brough and John was employed as a general farm labourer. Edith died aged 70, on 10 Jun 1973. John died aged 78 on 9 Aug 1976. They are buried together in the churchyard at Newport.
