Albert Lusby was born the 7 Jun 1892 at Cicey Cottage, Thearne, the third child of John Lusby and Flora (nee North). Albert was the eldest of a family of 6 children; brothers Alfred, Arthur, Bertie and sisters Florence Ann Elizabeth and Clara.
Albert joined the Navy as an Ordinary Seaman the 1 Feb 1916. He was drafted to HMS Queen on 8 Apr 1916 and remained there for his entire Naval Service, and was finally put to shore for demobilisation on 27 Jul 1919. He received a G1 badge for having completed 3 years service on 31 Jan 1919. Albert was awarded the Victory Medal, and the British War Medal.
Albert married Eva Maud Nicholson aged 19, at St John’s Church, Newland, Hull on 5 Nov 1916. They lived with Eva’s parents at Bridge House, Stoneferry, Hull, where 4 of their 10 children were born. They moved to Cliff Terrace, Fountain Road where four further children were born. Albert and Eva finally moved to Weighton Grove, on North Hull Estate and spent the rest of their lives there. Two children were born at Weighton Grove.
Albert set up in business as a fruit and potato merchant supplying greengrocers’ shops. He also collected and delivered sawdust to local butchers’ shops and public houses with his horse and cart. Albert ended his working life gardening in the municipal grounds, he died on 18 Dec 1956 aged 64.
Albert Lusby is remembered on the First World War Memorial in Woodmansey, which remembers those men of Thearne and Woodmansey who served.
