Fred Lynam was born in 1891, the sixth of eleven children born to Timothy and Sarah Ann Lynam. Timothy, was an engineer and Sarah Ann, and the first five of their children were all born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The family moved to Dalton Holme, near Beverley, around 1890 and Fred and his other siblings were all born and baptised in Dalton Holme. Fred became a Joiner.
In Nov 1915 Fred volunteered for service in the Territorial Force of the Yorkshire Regiment and, as part of the 5th Battalion, joined the British Expeditionary Force in France in Apr 1916. The Battalion was engaged in holding the line at Kemmel throughout May, Jun and Jul 1916. Between 7 and 17 Aug the 5th Battalion moved from Kemmel to Millencourt, a village just West of Albert in the Somme. On 10 Sep the 5th Battalion left Millencourt for the trenches in front of Bazentin Le Petit. Between 15 to18 Sep 1916, the Battalion was engaged in active operations and it was during this period that Fred Lynam, serving with "C" Coy of 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment was killed. He has no known grave, but he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, and his name appears on the Dalton Holme War Memorial and also on the War Memorial displayed in the Memorial Hall in Beverley
