Charles was born in Beverley in 1884, one of 5 children born to Shadwell and Mary Lowthorpe (nee Mitchell). He also had a ½ sister Maria Mitchell who was born in 1869. His father was a bricklayer's labourer. Charles had a younger brother also named Charles who was born in 1880 and died in 1882. His younger siblings were baptised at St Mary & St Nicholas, Beverley, but Charles and his older siblings do not appear to have been. In the 1901 census he is listed as being a bricklayer's labourer. In 1911 Charles, was listed as being a coal porter, and lived with his brothers William, Shadwell Jnr and cousin Henry Mitchell in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

Charles enlisted with the 1/5th Lincolns on 24 Aug 1914 and was reported to be wounded in the Beverley Guardian on 12 Feb 1916. Charles was discharged due to wounds, for which he was awarded the Silver Medal, on 17 May 1916 after serving in France.

He married Maud Ashton at the beginning of 1915 in Gainsborough and had at least 4 children: Raymond, Iris, Arthur Shadwell and Catherine M. Charles died in Sep 1939 aged 54 years and was buried at Gainsborough General Cemetery on 23 September.
