On the Beckside roll of honour both brothers appear alongside their younger brother John, who joined the Royal Navy. All the brothers received the Victory Medal and the British Medal with Ernest also receiving the Fourteen Star.

In 1920 Ernest married his cousin, Charlotte Annie Lount, the daughter of Herbert Hudson Lount. The couple appear not to have had any children and Ernest died in 1928 in Bradford. His wife Charlotte moved back to Beverley where she died in 1982.
