Tom Kitching born 1892, was one of three brothers born in Lund, the sons of John and his wife Sarah Alice Kitching (nee Lidster). John was born in Beverley but, orphaned at the age of six, he was raised by an uncle in Lund, he married Sarah in Lund and four of their five children were born in there before they moved to Beverley.
Tom and his two brothers, Charles Henry and Joseph all served during the war.
Tom, a groom, enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 30 Dec 1914 at Victoria Barracks, Beverley, and embarked for France in Aug 1915. He served with the 102nd Brigade.
All three of the Kitching brothers survived the war and Tom was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.
Tom married Gladys Welburn in Bridlington in Oct 1923 at Christ Church parish church. Gladys was the elder daughter of Ernest Welburn of Bridlington, a fisherman who had his own boat, and his wife Sarah. Tom was listed as s railwayman. They had two daughters, Gladys Dorothy born in Bridlington in 1925 and Joan born in Sculcoates in 1931. The 1939 Register shows Tom and his family living in Portobello Street, Hull and his occupation is given as railway goods shunter.
Tom died in Hull in 1974 at the age of 81. Gladys died in 1981, aged 79.
