Claude Frederick Knight was born in Beverley the 9 Jun 1892, the son of Frederick James and Harriet Marie Knight (nee Holmes). They had 7 children, 6 of them living with them on the 1911 census, the family lived at the Ship Inn, Market Place, Beverley, Claude was a butcher’s assistant.

Claude enlisted in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in Nov 1915 and served in the front from May 1916. On 29 Jul 1916 he suffered gunshot wounds to his leg whilst serving in France. On 1 Jun 1917 he was formally discharged being assessed as being no longer physically fit for War service. He was awarded the British and Victory medals

In the register of 1939, Claude is living with the Lancaster family in Beverley. He is cited as being disabled.

Two of Claude’s brothers also served, his elder brother Private Philip Knight, RAF Flight Mechanic died of pneumonia in 1919 and was buried in Queensgate cemetery. His younger brother George also served in the 5th East Yorkshire Regiment.
