Joseph was the middle of 13 children born to Thomas Escreet and Mary Kitchen in Arram, Leconfield. He was born the 21 Mar 1895 and baptised at the Primitive Methodist circuit on 23 Apr 1895. His father was a hind on a farm. In 1911 Joseph was living and working at Beck End farm in Arram as a Wagoner. On 2 Jul 1914 Joseph joined the 5th Reserve Army Service Corp at Lowthorpe as Driver CHT1069. He was awarded the Victory, British and 14 Star medals.
Joseph married Dorothy Wiles at Etton on 12 Sep 1925, they had two children. Joseph died in 1963 aged 68.
