Harry was the son of Thomas Escreet and Mary Kitchen of Hutton Cranswick. He was born in 1895, and was one of 13 children. His father was a hind on a farm. The family lived at Arram near Leconfield. In 1911 Harry was a wagoner working for George Lascelles, a farmer at Aike.
Harry enlisted with the Royal engineers in Jan 1915 and embarked for France in Aug 1915. He was discharged from the army in 1917. He was awarded the 15 Star, the Victory and British medals as well as the Silver War badge.
