Herbert James Kay was born in Halesowen, Worcestershire in 1883, the son of James and Elizabeth Kay, one of 5 children. His siblings were Edith A, George W, Lizzie and Nellie. His sisters and brothers were born in Beverley. Herbert's father was a gardener and the family lived in Willow Grove, Beverley in 1891 and in Tiger Lane, Beverley in 1901. On the 1901 census Herbert was listed a Plumbers Apprentice living with his parents aged 16 years. It is possible that Herbert joined the army before 1911, as a James Herbert Kay, born in Beverley is listed on the 1911 Census, as a private in military barracks near Newcastle upon Tyne.

Herbert James Kay was in the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in France on 20 Oct 1914. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Callis, France. His memorial is on Panel No. 5, stone 7.
