William Jackson was born in Beverley the 25 Sep 1896 and baptised at St Mary’s Church the 11 Jun 1902. He was one of seven children born to a housepainter James Jackson and his wife Leonora. His father was from Bilton; his mother from Hull. In the 1890s the family lived in Peel Place, North Bar Without and later at 2 Well Gardens. William was educated at Beverley Grammar School and later in life was a president of the old boys’ association and also served as assistant secretary. William was also a member of the Beverley Church Lads’ Brigade from Dec 1910 to Jun 1914 and was a well-regarded drummer in the band, William was “a lad of marked ability”. Upon leaving school William became a solicitor’s clerk.

William was a member of the Territorial Force, the Beverley Terriers, the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, a highly regarded warrant officer. They were mobilised at the start of the war and arrived in France on 15 Apr 1915 whereupon they were sent straight into action at the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium. Their first action at St Julien was to be costly. William reached the rank of sergeant and later switched to the 9th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. He would have served on the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele. The 9th spent time in Italy between Nov 1917 and Sep 1918 before returning to France. William was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and victory Medals. He left the Army in Feb 1919.

After the war William worked at Robinson, Sheffield and Till Solicitors of North Bar Without and was Deputy Registrar of births, deaths and marriages in Beverley. He was also clerk to the trustees of the Turner’s Charity in Beverley. By 1939 he was managing clerk there. In Jul 1921 he married Hilda M Storr, born in Elloughton in 1899. They had one child, Robert, born 1927. They lived at Elinwood, Longcroft Park. William died on 8 Jan 1944 and was buried at St Mary’s Cemetery on 12 Jan 1944.
