Soren Gustav Agerskow was born in Hull the 2 Dec 1891, the son of Emil Agerskow and Lilian (nee Stow). Lilian was originally from Wapping, London whilst Emil was from Sleswig, Denmark. Soren was brought up on Rosamund Street and South Boulevard in Hull. He attended teacher training college in Carmarthen, Wales and upon qualifying joined the National Union of Teachers in Hull.
Soren joined the 1st/4th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, he reached the rank of sergeant. soren arrived in France on 17 Apr 1915 and the regiment was immediately thrust into fighting in the Ypres area, taking part in the actions at St Julien, Frezenburg Ridge and Bellewaarde Ridge. The 1st/4thwere then switched to the Somme in 1916 and took part in actions at Flers-Courcelette, Morval and the Transloy Ridge. Soren received serious injuries which left him unable to continue in the army. On 22 Jun 1917 he was awarded a Silver Badge and discharged from the army. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the War and Victory medals.
Soren lived in the School House at Tickton where he was employed as principal teacher. He later lived at 182 Norwood. He married Muriel Wilson Jones at Beverley Minster on 2 Jan 1922. They had a son Donald, born 1929. Soren served as a Special Constable and was in the Observer Corps in the Second World War. He died on the 4 Aug 1966. Muriel died in 1968.
Soren is remembered on the Norwood Street Shrine as are his brothers, Emil, Walter and Christian.
