John was born in Beverley on 1 Aug 1892 and baptised at St Johns, Beverley on 20 Aug 1892. His father was John William Acklam, born in Wharram Percy, and his second wife Alice Stamp. John's mother died when he was only three. John had four sisters: three from his father's first marriage Mary, Lily Hannah, Blanche P and Florence Maud. His father married a third time to Margaret.

Private No 1876 John Acklam joined the 5th Yorkshire Regiment on the 18 Apr 1915 and was disembodied (a term used by the army for non-regular soldiers when they left the Army) on the 4 Feb 1919, leaving as a Sergeant No 23521, of the Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

In 1925 John was living at 24 Albert Terrace, Beverley, having married Betsy Doris Walker of Beverley in 1919, in 1911 Betsy was a general servant living with her parents at Riding Fields, Beverley. In 1911 John was a flour mill hand and in 1948 a flour mill foreman living at 49 Morton Lane, Beverley. They had a son, Bernard Acklam (1922 - 1999)

John died in Hull in 1981
