Description | This is an artificially created collection of miscellaneous tithe apportionments and maps. These types of documents are also available in other collections, for example some parish collections. Please see staff for further information. A tenth (tithe) of all produce was originally paid by the population to the Church of England. The Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 facilitated the replacement of the tithe with a money payment - a rent charge apportioned on each land plot. This process required a map identifying the properties in the tithe district and an apportionment distributing rent charges according to the value of the land. Altered apportionments could also be made after the original award had been confirmed. Three copies of the tithe apportionment and map were produced. One copy was retained in the parish, a second copy was deposited with the bishop of the diocese and the third copy was held by the Tithe Commissioners. Some of the parish copies have been deposited here, others are held by the Borthwick Institute at York. The Borthwick Institute also holds the copies originally deposited with the bishop. The Tithe Commissioners' copies are now held by the Public Record Office at Kew. |
