10 Jan 1883 reported by the] Chief Constable for excess of duty in arresting a man named Edmund Thomas Hudson, licensed pedlar, in the Wellington Inn, Mytongate on an unfounded charge of stealing certain steel watch guards the property of Mr William Shaw, Jeweller, 10 Queen Street: he, Bray, subjecting Hudson to much indignity in conveying the latter from the public house along the street to a Mr Townsend's general dealer in Mytongate: through illegally fastening a pair of iron snaps on his, Hudson's, wrists at 6.45pm [on the] 31st Oct, also improperly bribing the man Hudson, by the payment of 5 shillings to leave the Borough and not attend before the Watch Committee to substantiate the charge on the 15th Nov last, the result being that the Committee were unable to arrive at a definite conclusion in the matter, reduced from Detective Sergeant to Service Class Constable at 28 shillings per week and withdrawn from the Detective Department by the Watch Committee
