| Description | A series of records relating to the registration of aliens by the East Riding Constabulary. Papers survived as individual binders arranged by year. The documents were finally filed when the process of registration and monitoring of residency had been completed. Few papers have survived for the years 1941 and 1942. Papers have been removed from their original binder but their original arrangement of a series of annual files arranged in alphabetical order has been retained.
The key document for each alien is usually a registration card. Registration cards contain the following information: name, date, where issued, nationality, date of birth, place of birth, previous nationality, profession or occupation, date of arrival in UK, address of last residence outside the U.K., marital status, passport details. The reverse side of the card contains a records of addresses or residences in the U.K. with remarks and note of when alien departed. Note that not all papers contain the registration card.
Files may also contain the following documents: notices from the immigration officer informing Chief Constable that an alien is required to register with the police, notices and related correspondence from the Home Office, transfer cards containing details of transfer of between constabularies within the U.K. Files also contain all related correspondence concerning the registered alien. Photographs can also be included amongst the papers and, where this is the case, it has been noted in the catalogue. |
