AbstractBehind the publication of this romantic historical novel lies an intriguing mystery. The manuscript of the novel was left at the Bodley Head office without a clue to its origin and was duly published without an author coming forward to claim it. In later years it was suggested that the author was the Reverend John Arthur Hamilton who was a Congregational Minister at Crowle from 1870-78 although he never claimed authorship
