Abstract
James Clay (1804-1873) was M.P. for Hull 1847-1853 and 1857-1873 and was Hull's longest serving M.P. He established a relationship with the constituency to a degree never before experienced in Hull. By his nursing of his political base and his attention to the problems and interests of electors he pioneered the role of a good constituency M.P.
