Title | Vowesses and female lay piety in the Province of York, 1300-1530 |
Date | 1996 |
Description | Based on resarch on the York diocese bishops' registers and wills, which showed there were concentrations of vowesses in York and the area around Beverley and Hull. |
Abstract | Although the field of medieval lay piety has drawn interest recently, vowesses have received little attention. Vowesses were women, usually but not necessarily widows and often wealthy, who took a vow of chastity. |
