TitleVowesses and female lay piety in the Province of York, 1300-1530
Date1996
DescriptionBased on resarch on the York diocese bishops' registers and wills, which showed there were concentrations of vowesses in York and the area around Beverley and Hull.
AbstractAlthough the field of medieval lay piety has drawn interest recently, vowesses have received little attention. Vowesses were women, usually but not necessarily widows and often wealthy, who took a vow of chastity.
