Title | 'The George' of Beverley and Olav Olavesson: trading conditions in the North Sea in 1464 |
Date | 1995 |
Description | An examination of the day to day trading conditions in the North Sea based on depostions in Chancery concerning the voyage of 'The George' of Beverley in 1464. |
Abstract | The plaintiffs, John Middleton and Richard Coulton of Beverley and Richard Mason and William Warde of Hull claimed storms had blown 'The George' from the Humber to Norway where it was unjustly sized. The defendants, Clays White and Derek Tewson of Germany claimed that 'The George' had already been taken by the notorious Danish pirate, Olav Olavesson. The enquiry was held in Beverley and appears to have been settled by agreement rather than by formal judgement. |
