Title | The effect of papal provisions on Yorkshire parishes, 1342-1370 |
Date | 1992 |
Description | Includes references to the churches of Leven, Patrington, Hornsea and Brantingham, which is used as a detailed example of how papal provisions affected an indivual parish. |
Abstract | In the mid-fourteenth century the papal practice of appointing clerks to benefices was well established. The majority of provisions affected prebends in cathedrals or collegiae churches such as Beverley and Ripon but they also affected parochial livings. By an examination of the incidence of these provisions it is possible to explore how the system worked and the effect it had on the ministry of 14th century clergy. |
