Abstract | One form of endowment for the religious house that achieved popularity among benefacators was the parish church. The monastic expansion of the late 11th and 12 th centuries took place against a climate of opinion which came to frown on the possession of parish churches by laymen. This article examines the evidence for the transfer of parish churches to religious orders in Yorkshire. |
