AbstractIn 1825 there was discussion in parliament on granting port status to Goole. It was said according to Anglo saxon law, any place where a whale is caught is a port. In 1826 a whale was stranded in the new lock gates. The perceived odds against a whale being captured was too strong a sign to ignore and Goole was granted port status
