Title | A Roman settlement and early medieval motte at Moot-Hill, Great Driffield, North Humberside |
Date | 1983 |
Description | A report on excavations at Moot-Hill, Great Driffield undertaken in June 1975 on behalf of the Department of the Environment. |
Abstract | The monument had been considered to be a prehistoric burial mound reused in the Saxon period, intially for the same purpose and, later, as a moot or meeting place. Trial excavation of the earthworks at Moot Hill demonstrated that the surviving mound was the motte of a previously unsuspected Norman castle immediately east of the supposed site of the 8th century Northumbrian royal palace. 4th century Roman occupation was seated beneath the motte. |
